Marc Jacobs Expands Line and Saks Steps Up

I just found out that Saks will begin offering select designer clothing in sizes up to 20 starting this fall.  Pieces by such designers as Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, and the mothership of fashion, Chanel, will be offered in the NYC SFA starting this fall and if it goes well, will eventually expand to other locations.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed even though there is just a Saks outlet in Minneapolis.  Quite simple, it's all good for plus size women because it ups the ante in terms of what designers are offering to all potential customers.  Who among us hasn't dreamt of wearing a Chanel jacket?

On this same note, Marc Jacobs (cutie pictured above) will soon be offering a plus-size line.  It apparently will not be based on the collections shown in annual fashion weeks, but since Marc is known for his stylized, modern updated pieces, it bodes well for those of us begging for this look.  As with Saks, it also expands upon what is out there for all women, not just a select few and that can't help but be a positive sign that the retail world is finally getting it.  Are they finally getting the message that plus size women simply want the same resources their smaller sisters have for clothing?  My hats off to Marc Jacobs and a selection of some of the fun pieces he offers currently (not plus size unfortunately) via http://www.net-a-porter.com/ (including a pair of grey suede booties that I covet.  Oh fall..where are you?!)

Just Another Manic Monday..but at least I love my outfit!

What to wear on this sticky, muggy and HOT Minneapolis day?  I have visions of sipping minted ice tea on a shaded porch while I fan myself and mutter "fiddle dee dee" but alas, that is not my reality!  I will be taking a hot city bus and running errands before appearing in a Fringe show this evening where I will wear a decidedly un-stylish orange turtleneck and brown floral cardigan for my character Connie.  So, indulge me as I offer up these cool pieces to wear as we head towards the end of summer and that are perfect for the heat wave we are currently living dripping through!

Fall Fantasy Item # 4

Hello Mutha.  Hello Prada!

Have you seen the incredible pieces Prada is offering up for Fall?  Rich in saturated color and retro (yes, almost classic) in design, they are a great marriage of high-style and functionality.  But alas!  Plus size women do not have Prada as an option as they do not come in our sizes; at least, they do not come in my size (22).  Sigh.  Weep.  Copious amounts of tears!

But I have a solution.  If you love the look of Prada, run do not walk, to Anna Scholz (http://www.annascholz.com/).  Anna's beautiful clothing runs size 12-28 and is featured on-line, in stand-alone boutiques and in stores such as Nieman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.  (You may also remember her one-time line for Lane Bryant which I seem to remember being available for only a year or so quite some time ago.)  This line has a gorgeous European sensibility and doesn't shy away from offering beautifully made clothing in stunning fabrics and style-concious cuts.  The current look trends to what we saw on the runways for Fall '10, and that includes the use of animal prints, florals and electric blues and greens.  It can stand with the best of them and the double silk pleat shift dress pictured above would be a great fall addition to any fall wardrobe.  I would wear it with pumps and opaque tights and if it's chilly, throw on a cardigan or shrug.  The purse would be lady-like and structured - perhaps this stunning Marc Jacobs satchel:
By the way, pictured below is a dress from Prada's fall 2010 Ready to Wear line - I dare you to see the difference in style and sensibility between these two dresses and I hope you can add one of them to your fall wardrobe!  It's frustrating to feel like certain designers won't put out clothes that their larger admirers can wear but I also feel the power is ours to choose our looks and to dress in a way that expresses who we are.  And who I am is proud, stylish, modern and yes, also large.  I embrace it and I hope you do too!

Bombshell Arrives in St. Paul

If you are a Twin Cities girl, there is an exciting new additional to the plus size fashion and shopping scene!  Bombshell has exploded on Grand Avenue in the boutique-filled shopping district that has long lacked a place for plus size shoppers to go along with their smaller friends.  Denise Alden has brought sought-after labels such as Kiyonna, Igigi and LucieLu to her new shop, which opened last week to great fanfare.  Check out this article from the St. Paul Pioneer Press and put on your pumps and head to Bombshell - I will already be there when you arrive!

Fall Fantasy Fashion Item # 3

It seems I am continuing the trend of affordable luxury!  I found this incredible line through Saks Fifth Avenue called Design History.  In lieu of finding other information about them, they seem to focus on jersey and knits and their pieces are modern, fun and affordable.  This dress that is soon for my wardrobe, is only $79 at http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/ and who can't love that?!

This dress is a little bit rock and roll, yet not so far out that you probably can't wear it to work.  It'd be a perfect date night dress!  While summer still reigns you can wear it bare legged with flat sandals and as it cools off this fall, add black tights and boots and a denim jacket.  A great transition piece, it's a bit classic little black dress, but also sassy and definately not one of the dowdy pieces we are often thrown in the plus size fashion world.  In other words, it's not a piece your grandmother would wear.  Unless your grandmother was Cher.

My work here is done.

Information:
Design History Studded Stretch Knit Dress
Soft stretch knit with dropped waist and gathered skirt and studded trim.
Boatneck
Three-quarter sleeves
Studded self belt
About 42" from shoulder to hem
95% viscose/5% spandex

Slaying the Little Guy

In my unemployed state, I find myself wanting things. Lots of things. New things. Things I even have already. Like perfume. I’m obsessed with buying a new bottle of perfume. I don’t even know which perfume but I know I want the luxury of a pretty new bottle in a lovely little box and a cute shopping bag in which to carry it out of the store. Before I was laid off I wouldn’t give this a second thought before heading to the store and leaving with new perfume, probably with some new lipstick and powder as well. Now, it’s food vs. luxury and let’s face it, food wins. As does bus fare, doctor’s visits and the occasional hair cut to prevent me from looking like Sasquatch. After all these years of listening to my dad proclaim his status as “the little guy”, and me doing everything in my power to prove that I wasn’t one, indeed, it seems I am.

I jokingly tell people that “I’m on the dole” but the reality is, I am on government assistance for the first time in my 46 years. Listen, I’m thankful as hell. If it weren’t for the $404 I receive every week I’d be somewhere I choose not to think about.

And I know that I am far from alone. In the small company I was laid off from alone, there are about 40 sharing this same fate. They too are probably sending out resume after resume to no avail. I’ve never had to look for a job before – they’ve always simply come to me through connections or simply happened if I pursued them. The job I was laid off from was one of those – seemingly the last as the world has changed and with it, my ability to purchase perfume.

Yes, I realize that life isn’t just about new things. People live in this world on far less that I’m currently receiving on unemployment and they are happy and well-adjusted people. Likewise, people live on a lot more and are miserable. Spirituality dictates that we find joy in things much bigger than bottles of perfume or a new pair of jeans with a tummy tuck panel- but isn’t spirituality also about the treats and simple pleasures in life? A new piece of pretty clothing could be just the thing to pep up a sagging spirit or lift a head just a little bit higher and I don’t think I need to apologize for that. That said – I do pray a lot. More than I ever used to. And I talk about it. I tell people “I’m going to stay home and pray” and I’m quite sure they think I’m enjoying a few too many highballs like my mom’s Aunt Bea used to do. She’d garage sale with my mom and her sisters all day – buying things left and right, and then in the evening have a few of her favorite libations, only to end up sobbing “I don’t know what I’d do without you girls.” You have to hand it to her – she did really understand what was important.

Admittedly, pleasure is found in some very small delights. I love sleeping until 8 am. My days have a decided routine as I head to my favorite coffee shop for a blueberry muffin and diet coke and where I log into my computer and check jobs and resumes and email. I see more of my friends who are self-employed and for whom Monday-Friday time is not a whole lot different than weekend time. My life has taken that turn as well. Fridays are no longer quite as exciting and Mondays no longer as dreaded. I lose track of formal holidays as there is no “the office is closed tomorrow” excitement. There is an even-ness to my time that is rather nice and I find that I enjoy being in my house writing with the French doors open to my flower boxes on a nice summer day.

But I am still faced with an unrelenting desire for new perfume. Does the little guy ever get to satisfy a base urge? My father – the king of the little guys – was as generous as tomorrow but also very tight with his money. Little guys are like that – always struggling to get by. In his mind he was always one paycheck away from disaster even though he worked to the bone. One of his biggest splurges in life was a beautiful, polished $700 acoustic guitar. He bought it without knowing how to play a lick and quite honestly, we thought he had flipped a gasket. What we didn’t realize at the time was that his childhood fantasies of Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, lived on in our dad, a man whose evening pleasure to this point had been holding a running hose on the new birch trees he had planted in our front yard. Dad took some guitar lessons and learned a few chords and that was all he needed. For some time following, he would come home from his drafting job (the one he held steadily for 25 years), have some dinner and watch the news and then he would retire to the master bedroom, put on his favorite Gene Autry album and sit softly strumming and singing along with his boyhood hero. Even little guys can find ways to fulfill their dreams it seems.

Fall Fantasy Fashion Item # 1

This is a multi-seasonal fantasy item and it is a one-size fits all, affordable yet luxurious item.  Wearing this lip color will make you feel fantastic even if you have just been dumped, fired or rained on in a torrential monsoon-like downpour like the ones plaguing me today.

Bobbie Brown is the maven of make up.  She got her start doing theatrical make up, which led to work for fashion photo shoots.  After meeting a chemist at a shoot, she developed her own line of brown-based lip colors and a make up star was born!  She found that women really did want make up that looked and felt natural and that simply enhanced the beautiful faces we already have.  Her make up was yellow-based, instead of red, which revolutionized the way all make up is now produced.  She has a complete make up line as well as scents, brushes and skincare, but my favorite is the lip products - they are simply the best out there bar none.

Pictured here is Rich Color Gloss and it's got the shine of a gloss but colors like a lipstick.  It does not feather and it will last for hours.  I love this stuff and at about $20 it's an affordable luxury.  It comes in 8 shades incluing pale, neutral, deep and bright options - I opt for the "Naked" which is a buff nude.

Nude lips are really big for Fall and this will get you off to a great start!

Bobbie Brown is available at most major department stores and online at http://www.bobbiebrowncosmetics.com/.

Haute Couture - A Fashionable Fat Girl's Best Friend?

The Fall 2010/Winter 2011 Haute Couture shows just wrapped up in Paris.  Haute Couture is is a french term for "high sewing" and simply put, it's custom clothing made to order for a specific customer.  It is often from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail by very experienced seamstresses.  The highest fashion houses in the world produce Haute Couture - Chanel, Dior, Valentino - but it is thought to be a dying breed due to economic reality and the fast paced world that demands something new every other day.  In this Gap-saturated world of khakis and t-shirts, a hand sewn seam does not garner the same reverence it once did!  While we can debate the merits of Haute Couture in today's world, I think we can agree that the designers who produce and hold the legal title, present some of the most delectable and divine clothing that most of us could only dream of owning.

But it also makes me think.  As a fat woman who yearns for an Armani suit in a size 22 (Giorgio can you hear me?), the thought of a custom-made piece of clothing is quite appealing.  What is to stop us from taking a photo of a favorite or desired piece of clothing, to a talented seamstress, and having that piece replicated or created in our size?  It's not quite "Haute Couture" in it's pure definition, but while I devour every fashion magazine known to man but very few, if any, of them present clothing that is available in my size.  Maybe the answer is to take those pictures to a seamstress and have those pieces created in my size?  The only thing missing might be a label but frankly, I don't wear a label because I can't.  While many designers have customers loyal only to them; customers who own closets full of that designers pieces, I can't be loyal to a designer as much as I can to a "brand" (like Lane Bryant or Calvin Klein RTW) and it's not quite the same.  Maybe the answer is to take the bull by the horns, or rather the designers by the shoes, and get those pieces I covet in my own way?  Love Lanvin?  Seamstress.  Adore Armani?  Seamstress.  It's a thought.

What got me on this subject were the photos of the Dior Fall 2010/Winter 2011 Haute Couture collection.  Dior is the epitome of not only Haute Couture, but of fashion.  The Dior "New Look" of 1947 revolutionized fashion for women after World War II and the house continues to this day under John Galliano.  Whereas people expect so much black from high fashion, this collection is drawn from nature in the form of poppies, crocuses, tulips - and is all about color. And not just color, but saturated, vivid, technicolor.  Another piece of Haute Couture is the drama and presentation.  You may look and think "what does this have to do with what I wear?  I'm not walking out of the house with netting over my head unless I'm Lady Gaga!"  What Haute Couture does is guide the ready to wear pieces that will find their way into our local Macy's, Bloomingdale's and the like.  Color can be translated, as can cut and shape.  Regardless, these pieces are stunning and I wanted to share them here.  In the Wizard of Oz, poppies made Dorothy fall asleep.  Here, they are as invigorating as a jolt of much-needed caffiene to brighten up a long and dark winter!  Enjoy!

Fall Fantasy Fashion Item # 2

Let me start by saying that last night I dreamt about wearing the Marina Rinaldi boots that were featured in Fall Fantasy Fashion Item # 1.  And in the dream I was ecstatic to have boots that fit my calves and if I do say so myself, they looked awesome!  The dream continues...

One of the biggest looks for Fall 2010 is camel, which makes me think longingly of my days of monogrammed sweaters and circle pins.  Sigh.  But, in the interest of not appearing dowdy (when I was in highschool I'm quite sure I looked like I was 46) shake up your camel pencil skirt with some fun accessories and what goes better with camel than an animal print?  In fact, you're going to see this combination everywhere this fall.

If you're like me and need a bag in which to carry your Diet Coke, the Prada Leopard Print Cavallino Bowler (http://www.niemanmarcus.com/) pictured above should do the trick and keep you on trend with the best of them.  Move over Tinsley Mortimer!

Fall Fantasy Fashion Item # 1

This is the first in a series I'm going to do every week featuring a different fantasy fashion item for Fall.  I'm starting with the obsession that grabs me every September and that is to find a pair of black riding boots that fit my 19" calf.  When I was in NYC last August we went to Saks and I salivated over these boots in Salon Z and this year...I want them.  With the exception of a volumnious peach tafetta skirt I saw in the window at Young Quinlan in 1981 that I HAD to have to wear to my senior prom, I have never wanted anything more.

They are on the Saks website (http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/) as I write, just calling my name.  Shouting really.  I would sell my first born for them.  I would give up Diet Coke for these beauties (and if you knew me, you'd know the sacrifice that would entail!)  I'm scheming because I.  Want.  These.  Boots.

Details:
This is the Marina Rinaldi, Salon Z Manhattan Leather Boot - $655.
Day-to-night style in buttery-soft leather has a low stacked heel for a chic and sexy look.
Stacked heel, about 1½"
Shaft, about 15½"

Wild for White Blouses

We all know the difference between "fashion" and "style" don't we?  Fashion is of the moment..it's studded jeans and peasant blouses in the winter.  Style is timeless and Jackie O sunglasses and strings of Chanel-inspired pearls.  I am musing today on the most stylish of wardrobe items; the wardrobe staple that not only goes with everything but that everything wants to go with!  Other items of clothing can only dream of being as special as this one!  I am talking about the white blouse.  Timeless.  Elegant.  Playful.  Conservative.  Racy.  Cotton.  Silk.  Marilyn wore them.  Sharon Stone wears them with jeans and tafetta.  Great at any size and great at any time.  If you don't have a white blouse - by all means, now is the time.  It ranks right up there with the little black dress and a strand of pearls but while it's classic and timeless, it's also a bit rock n'roll and a whole lot of sexy.

Here are some of my favorites and a look through the years.  Enjoy and happy Monday!

A Piece of Work

Seriously.  See this film.  Even if you've never liked Joan Rivers...see this film.  You will walk away with a newfound respect and admiration for this woman, who at the age of 76, still gets the most satisfaction from a full calendar and non-stop work.  She's brilliant, hilarious, raunchy, real and yes, over the top.  I can't help but love a woman who has had a limosine pick her up since 1969 and still thanks God everytime she gets into it!  And she does the luxury thing really well but you see how hard she works to keep it.  This is the great misconception of people who think fame buys you relaxation and luxury.  Mostly it buys you alot more work.  This movie provides a great glimpse of the wierd reality of the comedy world where one night you're appearing at the Kennedy Center Honors and the next finds you at a casino in the middle of the woods in Northern Wisconsin.  Similarily, I recently appeared in a show in Minneapolis in front of hundreds and followed by a glamorous after-party, and then the next week found me performing in front of 15 people in a smoky bar in Ethan South Dakota.  Joan and I have something in common, even if I am not getting picked up in a limosine all the time!  She's incredible and this is my thumbs up encouragement to all of you to see this wonderful glimpse into the life of a comedienne who not only opened the doors for many of us over the past four decades, but who continues doing so today.

I Scream...You Scream...We all Scream for Ice Cream!

This calls for a Southern accent.
I just had an organic strawberry ice cream cone y'all.  Seriously.  It makes me think of sitting on a porch on a lazy summer afternoon..with the moss-covered branches draped overhead and the sound of cicadas filling the air.  I picture myself wearing a huge straw hat and fanning myself.  Fiddle dee dee.

Here's the thing.  I don't really even like ice cream, but the Pumphouse Creamery has the most divine, organic, home made treats so how could I resist on this muggy summer day?  How can I resist my favorite thing in the world - cream - mixed with sugar and the freshest most lovely strawberries?  Hmmmmm..I ask you!?

So - a shout out to Pumphouse Creamery (http://www.pumphouse-creamery.com/) and if you are in Minneapolis, a visit to 48th and Chicago Avenue South is well worth the trip.  Y'all.

Dream Big

Do you believe in dreams?  Do you believe your dreams are worthy of your time and attention?  And I'm not talking just about the dreams we have to climb mountains or pursue a new path in life...I'm also talking about our sleeping dreams.  The ones that come to us underwater as we sleep and that can leave us feeling refreshed and excited, or black and blue.  I have a zillion dreams.  In my waking life, I am writing a book; I am performing and speaking and want to grow that career.  I am doing workshops about dream wardrobe building for plus size women.  The dreams are varied and important to me and I give them my time, attention and love.  Also, I often have the most vivid sleeping dreams and they mean something in my life. Recently I dreamt about a person I hadn’t seen or thought of in months and the very next day who do you think I ran into? My subconscious certainly seems to know some things that I do not!  Earlier this week I completed a very intense four-day workshop in which I felt exposed and truthful and the night after a very open converstaion with one of the facilators, I dreamt he and I were standing in a room together and I was naked and trying to cover up.  It's not rocket science to figure out the meaning of that in my life.  Some evenings I go to sleep waiting anxiously to see what worlds my dreams may place me in. Some evenings, if I’m sad or apprehensive, I look towards my dreams for perhaps a bit of comfort. Some dreams of course, are just a mish-mash of the craziest, most unlikely events but when you think about it, isn’t life just a mish mash of the craziest most unlikely events too?  Think about your dreams both sleeping and awake.  Give your dreams your time and your attention because dreams are where it all begins.  If you want to start your own business, start looking into the steps you need to take to do so.  If you want to sail around the world with your spouse, what do you need to do to prepare for that undertaking and why couldn't you do it?  Likewise, listen to you night dreams.  We always know the truth whether we admit it to ourselves or not.

Dreams are the roadmaps to the journey of our lives..let's follow them!

And speaking of dreams..here are some pre-fall beauties that I stumbled onto at Nieman Marcus!  (Black dress and boots:  Prada; Ballet flats:  Yves Saint Laurent; Handbag:  Burberry; Dress at top:  Melissa Massie

The Power of Positive

When I let fear rule my actions, nothing good comes from it.  If I was in a jungle and facing a hungry tiger, yes, fear would be very appropriate! But so would keeping a level head. So would moving slowly and methodically. If I kept my eyes on the tiger, remained calm and did not become a panicked, screaming, crying, running target, chances are the situation would end much more favorably.

Like a tiger, fear can turn us into screaming, crying, running, crazy people.  Whether it’s fear about a relationship or fear about money or a job, it's fear that ultimately keeps me paralyzed and keeps building upon itself.  Fear makes me eat uncontrollably or spend money on things I cannot afford.  Fear gives the tiger the power to consume me.

Last week I was scared and feeling overwhelmed about many things when I realized I was giving fear way too much power in my mind.  Just making this connection changed how I looked at things.  I decided I needed to change how I was thinking and I started by making my mantra into one of abundance and prosperity.  I refocused on what I could do right now to bring about the results I needed.  I became proactive and I made some goals for the week (as opposed to thinking about the next year and what was going to happen in eight months!) and had to do the work, but this simple shift in my thinking made all of the difference and helped me to make my goals and continue moving as opposed to feeling paralyzed by fear.  The tiger is still present but instead of running from it, I am now feeding it out of my hand!

What are you afraid of this week and how can you take back your power and move forward?

Dress for Summer

In honor of my SATC post (see below), check out these lovely dresses.  I love dresses...they look amazing and are comfortable and easy in the hot summer months.  A dress can be as formal or as casual as you make it and is appropriate pretty much anywhere.  Look, if Sarah Jessica Parker can ride a camel in the desert in a dress..I can certainly go to the grocery store in one!

These are some of my current favorites!
